As with many of the finest Malayers, this piece could easily be mistaken for a Sarouk in both its design and colouring, although the distinctive character of the madder shades is a characteristic feature of the Malayer origin. The monumental medallion in moss green, with its white central roundel holding a many-petalled blossom, dominates the composition; the saturated dark blue of field and border provides a rich contrast that additionally emphasizes the medallion. The drawing of the various floral ornaments of the field and corners provide more understated, subtle visual pleasures. The rug is, above all, extremely stylish, combining compositional panache, magnificent richness of colour and the superbly glossy wool of the origin in a way that is totally satisfying; a superb Malayer.
