A splendid and flawlessly-crafted early Isfahan carpet in a classical Persian bird and animal design, strongly reminiscent in both composition and palette of the great Animal Carpets of 16th and 17th Century Safavid Persia. The diverse exotic creatures which fill the foliage of the glowing magenta field are meticulously rendered in the brilliant Safavid Court design style. Massive bird forms, a Lion and Gazelle combat group, wonderfully imaginative Phoenix symbolic conflict dominate the upper part of the field. As the design ascends the carpet, against a sinuous three-plane lattice of 'Vase Carpet' design, the various birds and animals depicted gradually become more peaceful and overtly Paradisical in Character. This fantastic and artistic design shows Illiati life. The Illiaties live in small green openings in the nature. Their life is in the nature, bringing their herd out to graze everyday, lying in open tents nearby during the day and playing the flute to enjoy life and to converse with their herds, letting them know their caretaker is around, telling them when to follow him to go home. In the middle field of the carpet there is a dog barking, protecting the sheeps from other predators.
